SHAZAM! Won’t Be A DC Universe Movie?

New details on the SHAZAM! movie make it seem like it stands alone.

SHAZAM! Won’t Be A DC Universe Movie?

With the way that Warner Bros is pursuiing its DC Comics movies - serious, grim and weighty films with very little room for fun or levity - Shazam! seemed like a weird fit. It's about a kid who, when he says a magic word, turns into a giant superhero. It's the superheroics version of Big, and it has the possibility of being fun and light and charming. How would that work alongside the DC movies that WB is churning out for its Justice League universe?

The answer: it looks like it won't. Shazam! is going to be a New Line film, and it sounds like it will stand on its own. Toby Emmerich, president of New Line (a subsidiary of Warner Bros) talked to EW about the film:

“It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies," he said, adding the movie “will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.” Which, I think, describes most Marvel movies.

So don't expect to see The Rock's Black Adam trading blows with Ben Affleck's Batman or Henry Cavill's Superman anytime soon. But the great news from this: Shazam! will have the freedom to include weird characters like Dr. Sivana and Mr. Mind, the evil worm. And outside of the DC Cone Of Grim, maybe Shazam! will get to introduce the entire Marvel family, including Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr, whose fashion choices were imitated by Elvis. Seriously.
