Colin Trevorrow, director of not as good as everybody says Sundance movie Safety Not Guaranteed, is directing Jurassic Park IV - which has been alternately referred to as a sequel and a reboot, which I guess means it's been in that Uncertainty phase of development where nobody knows what the fuck they're doing, they just know they have a date to meet. The movie was being really hurried along for a while, but now it seems that Universal is actually giving Trevorrow a little time to actually make a film, not just placeholders for CGI set pieces.
At least that's what he's saying to the fans. Trevorrow was on a Jurassic Park fan podcast recently, and while mostly he said nothing at all ("It's so fun making dinosaurs!" I'm paraphrasing here), he did drop this interesting bit:
Steven [Spielberg] has been very closely involved in this and he cares about the franchise very much and he does not want the movie to happen unless there's a script that deserves to be shot and I feel the exact same way and that's what we're doing here. And Frank [Marshall] feels the same way, so when you have three guys who feel like that sometimes you're going to end up with a movie that gets pushed a year. But, in the end, however it turns out, the one thing no one's going to be able to say is that we didn't give a shit or that we phoned it in 'cause that is not true.
So it sounds like they don't have a script yet. All year long we've been hearing rumors that shooting will start soon, but if there's no script that doesn't seem likely. I mean, it's likely because this is Hollywood and these motherfuckers shoot without scripts all the time, but Trevorrow is explicitly saying that won't happen.
The other thing we can take from this is that Spielberg and Marshall aren't wed to a 2015 release date, which is what the movie currently has. And that's smart - Summer 2015 is going to be a bloodbath. Getting Jurassic Park IV into 2016 gives not only room to develop the best possible script and also open the movie away from The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman vs Superman and maybe Star Wars Episode VII.
I'm in no hurry. Jurassic Park IV can certainly take its time as far as I'm concerned.
