New G.I. JOE: RETALIATION Trailer Seems Oddly Familiar

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION apologizes for the wait and would like a second try at your hearts.

When I lived in Taiwan, every film seemed to come packed with the same trailers regardless of genre. And because I saw a lot of movies, this meant I had to sit through some trailers more than should be legal. G.I. Joe: Retaliation was one of those trailers.

So I can empirically say that the footage offered in this new G.I. Joe trailer is about 90% the same as the footage offered in the old one. There's more Channing Tatum, a bit more Bruce Willis and some new stuff in the quick cuts, but we've seen most of this before.

I can understand why they did this. Both trailers sell the same story (Joes dying at the beginning, the President is not who he seems and he has a bomb, Bruce Willis gets involved, etc), and that story requires pretty much the same footage to express itself now as it did before.

But it kind of tempers enthusiasm, especially in the wake of so many other, more exciting trailers this week. Not that my enthusiasm was high to begin with. G.I. Joe was silly fun but not very memorable. This one looks like it could be a big improvement, but the way the trailer takes for granted the awesomeness of Bruce Willis gives me a slight Expendables 2 vibe.

I might be singing a different song had I seen that mountainside fight presented at this year's BNAT, though. That already sounds way better than anything in either Expendables film. But will Retaliation have a moment to rival Mickey Rourke's bizarre "Castles Made of Sand" speech? We'll have to wait until March to find out. But, no. The answer is no.
