Film Crit Hulk Smash: A QUICK NOTE ON “THE DEATH OF CINEMA”

READER RYAN NAUGHTON SENT HULK AN E-MAIL WITH THE FOLLOWING QUESTION, ONE THAT HAS BEEN A TOPIC OF MUCH PUBLIC DISCUSSION...

Hello once again,

I have a feeling you've heard this from a bunch people but in the wake of Andrew O’Hehir and David Denby's articles about their feelings about the" death of cinema," how do you feel on these extreme perspectives?

HULK HAS A VERY SHORT ANSWER: HULK FEELS LIKE THOSE WRITERS ARE BEING SELFISH.

TO EXPLAIN:

HULK GETS THEIR PERSPECTIVE, BUT IT'S A PRETTY CRAPPY ONE THAT REALLY DOESN'T REFLECT A REAL KIND OF TRUTH. THE ONLY THING ANY OF THEIR INSIGHTS ARE DOING IS JUST REFLECTING THEIR CURRENT MOOD.... REALLY. IT'S A CASE OF PURE SOLIPSISM. IT'S AS IF THE ENTIRE LANDSCAPE OF CINEMA ONLY EXISTS INSIDE THEIR HEAD. AND WHILE ALL OUR CINEMATIC EXPERIENCES ARE UNIQUELY OUR OWN, THEY ARE MAKING THE MISTAKE OF ASSUMING THAT THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE IS THE ONE THAT COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY SPEAKS FOR ALL. SERIOUSLY, DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LITTLE KIDS ARE FALLING IN LOVE WITH MOVIES RIGHT THIS SECOND? HOW MANY HIGH SCHOOLERS ARE SEEING SUNSET BOULEVARD OR THE WILD BUNCH OR SEVEN SAMURAI FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER? HOW MANY FILM STUDENTS ARE GETTING THEIR FIRST LOOK AT TARKOVSKY OR BERGMAN? HOW MANY FIRST TIME DIRECTORS ARE COMING UP THE RANKS WITH THE ABILITY TO MAKE WONDERFUL, INGENIOUS MOVIES? THE FUTURE OF CINEMA IS ALWAYS AHEAD OF US AND IT'S ANCHORED IN THE WAY YOUNG KIDS DISCOVER THE PAST.

MEANING THE INESCAPABLE TRUTH IS THAT CINEMA DIES WITH EVERY BIT OF IDIOCY, CYNICAL RELEASE OR COMMERCIALLY DRIVEN CLAPTRAP, AND IS SUBSEQUENTLY REBORN WITH EVERY PASSIONATE AND PERSONAL RELEASE, FIRST-TIME WATCH OF A CLASSIC OR JOYOUS OCCASION WITH FRIENDS. SURE, THE GENERAL CYCLE OF CINEMA GOES THROUGH ITS COMPARATIVE HIGHS AND LOWS, BUT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY. THERE WAS THE HEIGHT AND SUBSEQUENT DEATH OF THE GOLDEN AGE. THE RISE OF THE AMERICAN CINEMA OF THE 70'S FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY THE RISE OF THE CORPORATE CONGLOMERATES. THE RISE AND ULTIMATE THEFT OF INDIE CINEMA. IT ALWAYS FALLS... BUT IT ALWAYS GETS BACK UP AGAIN.

AND HONESTLY, YOU CAN'T CALL ANYTHING "THE DEATH OF CINEMA" IN THE YEAR OF HOLY MOTORS, LOOPER, CLOUD ATLAS, THE MASTER, THE RAID, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI, MAGIC MIKE, PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE, MOONRISE KINGDOM AND THE INVISIBLE WAR. ALL FILMS THAT BLEW HULK AWAY, AND EVEN IF YOU THEY DIDN'T BLOW YOU AWAY...

IT IS RATHER HARD TO ARGUE THAT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A PULSE.
