The Marvel Cinematic Universe is crossing over to TV with SHIELD, a show that will be created by Joss Whedon (and possibly directed by him, at least the pilot). The release of Item 47, a short on the Blu for The Avengers, gave a hint at what a SHIELD TV show might be like, and I liked what I saw.
Now there is a casting breakdown for the show which reveals some of the agents featured. None of them seem to be characters I recognize from the comics.
SKYE: This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.
AGENT GRANT WARD: Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.
AGENT ALTHEA RICE: Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.
AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS: These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
Those sound like Joss Whedon-y characters.
Will characters from Item 47 appear on the show? This breakdown is just for casting new roles, so it's unclear right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see Titus Welliver appear, and I'm always pro more Lizzy Caplan. As for other characters from the Marvel Universe? I wouldn't expect too many to show up, but you never know if there will be a guest spot from a Sam Wilson or a Wendell Vaughn.
