This Captain America Clip Should Never Have Been Cut From THE AVENGERS

A wonderful, somber sequence establishes Cap as a man out of time.

CLIP REMOVED BY REQUEST FROM DISNEY

I understand why that alternate opening was cut from The Avengers, but why the heck was this sequence removed? At the time I sort of hoped that it was because Marvel was planning on using it - or material very much like it - in Captain America: The WInter Soldier. But the fact that the clip is being included on the Blu for The Avengers indicates that this will be the only time we see it.

Which is too bad! I think with the alternate opening this would have been too dark, but in the current cut it would have only helped. Steve Rogers thinking about calling Peggy is a wonderful moment, and the shot of him alone on the subway is arresting. This is material that completely belonged in the movie.

It would be cool if this was spliced back in for the rerelease this weekend, but somehow I doubt it.

Side note of the personal variety: I was never a Captain America fan. That changed a few years back when I gave Ed Brubaker's run on the comic a shot and really loved the way he wrote Cap. I then became a huge fan of the Winter Soldier and Bucky as Captain America as well. After that it was Captain America: The FIrst Avenger and The Avengers that sealed the deal - I'm a Captain America fan. Big time. Growing up a Spider-Man partisan I never imagined a time when I would anticipate a Cap movie more than a Spidey movie. And yet here we are.
