Trailer For Animated EPIC Almost Totally Works
This trailer from the people behind ICE AGE almost convinced me it was good!
Setting aside the fact that Epic is the worst, most generic name for something since Adventure for the Atari 2600, the first two minutes of this trailer captivated and intrigued me. I was swept up into this world of faeries in a forest of wonder. And then Aziz Ansari pops up as the wise-cracking slug and I was like, fuck this business.
There was a Miyazaki vibe to what came at the beginning of the trailer, and while I realize that Miyazaki still bows to unfunny comic relief and stuff it's way less irritating than the crap shoved into our stateside CGI movies. Why can't a CGI movie be made for a PG audience that doesn't include wise-cracking characters or pop culture references or slapstick? Why can't it just be a good adventure story? Epic looked like just a good adventure story. They should have never had those characters open their mouths.
