Badass Exclusive: Mondo’s CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Print

I grew up a fan of the Planet of the Apes films, and I always knew them as a series. Channel 11 in New York would play them all in a row, one per day, for a week. Sometimes they would even play Return to the Planet of the Apes, a "movie" that was actually two episodes of the Apes TV series cut together.

But for most people Planet of the Apes is just the famous first film. Not many have seen the full five-movie cycle. It was always a dream of mine to do a film marathon in a theater, and last year that dream came true at the Alamo Ritz.

It was a pretty incredible event because the audience was full of later Apes film virgins. It was thrilling to hear them gasp at the INSANE ending of Beneath, and to hear them realize that Escape was a comedy... until it also went insane.

But most gratifying was hearing people talk after Conquest, a hard, serious and political film that has never gotten much attention. It vies for the spot of my favorite Apes film, and hearing people blown away by the film's explicit racial message was just so cool. In my job the best thing you can do is turn someone on to a strange or unique film, and we did that to a whole theater full of people that day.

So I'm proud to exclusively present the incredible Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Mondo print, one of a series of six that celebrates the entire series.

Austin, TX--- January 25, 2012 --- Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces a spectacular set of prints for the Planet of the Apes films.  In May 2011, the Alamo Drafthouse hosted “Day of the Apes,” an epic 8-hour marathon of all five Planet of the Apes films on 35mm where puny humans paid respect to their future ape masters.  The poster set, created to commemorate the event, is finally unveiled to the public with each film tackled by a different artist.

The posters, created in partnership with Sideshow Collectibles and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, will be sold as a set on Thursday, January 26th for $230.  This will also include a bonus print “Alamo Drafthouse Wants You To Go Ape!” which is a variation of the famous Twentieth Century Fox poster created for the 1973 re-release of all five films in theaters.

The prints will be sold as a set on Thursday, January 26th for $230. Any remaining individual prints will go on sale on Friday, January 27th.  Follow @MondoNews for on sale announcements.
