Before he was making Muppets, Jim Henson was making trippy shorts.
You know Jim Henson best from his work on Sesame Street and The Muppets, but when he first started out he was a forward thinking ad man and artist. His early Muppets starred in many commercials, but more interesting than that is the experimental work he did.
Last year Harry Knowles showed one of those experimental shorts, the Academy Award nominated Time Piece, at Butt Numb A Thon. It was trippy and cool and weird and subversive - real art school hippie stuff. So is Idea Man, another one of his early, trippy films. This one seems to come from Henson's interactions with the business men of his day; I can imagine an ad exec saying much of this to a young Henson.
I've grabbed a shot of early Kermit, who appears in Idea Man for like a second. The narrating voice, of course, is Henson.
